Okay, “NEEDS” may be a bit dramatic, but as a mother of five with kids ranging from age 2 to 14, I’ve had my fair share of trial and error. By the time my youngest arrived, I definitely knew what was essential for surviving those first few months of newborn life. Here’s my tried-and-true list of the top 10 things that every new mom needs to make life a little easier and a lot more comfortable.

A Reliable and Comfy Baby Carrier
A baby carrier is an absolute lifesaver. Plus, it's great for bonding and can often help calm your little one. But whether you're soothing a fussy baby or need your hands free to get things done around the house, a carrier like the Ergobaby Omni 360 or Baby K’tan gives you the freedom to keep your baby close while staying mobile. My personal favorite style of carrier is a Mei Tai but they're kind of hard to find these days!
A Comfortable Nursing Pillow
Not everyone loves using a nursing pillow, but for me, it was a lifesaver. Nursing can be tough on your back and shoulders, especially during those marathon feeding sessions. And I tried several kinds and always came back to using a Boppy with a luxe nursing cover with a waterproof cover underneath.
A White Noise Machine
Babies are used to the constant noise of the womb, so a white noise machine can work wonders in helping them sleep soundly. The Hatch Rest not only provides soothing sounds but also doubles as a nightlight, which is perfect for those late-night feedings.
Bamboo PJs - for baby and mom
Hi, my name is Ashley, and I'm addicted to Little Sleepies. But they're just the best thing since sliced bread, so comfy, last so much longer than cotton or fleece sleepers that they really are worth the extra investment. And while you are there, get yourself a Cloud Blanket or two, they're pretty awesome. My other favorite bamboo brand is Posh Peanut and should definitely be checked out as well!
A Breast Pump
Whether you’re planning to go back to work or just want to have some flexibility, a reliable breast pump like the Spectra S2 or Medela Pump in Style is invaluable. I have used both and prefer the Spectra but they're both great. It allows you to build up a stash of milk and gives you the freedom to let someone else take over a feeding or two.
A Rocker or Glider
When I met my husband, he had just bought a new La-Z-Boy rocker/recliner that he loved so much. And when my first was born I took possession of that chair much to his surprise. From there forward it became my rocking chair for our babies and I rocked all 5 of our kids to sleep countless times in that chair. Every mom needs her own super cozy rocking chair for those long nights in the beginning.
Sophie the Giraffe
Okay, so like I said, maybe it's not a NEED, but I've used Sophie (multiple Sophies actually) for all 5 of my kids and they've all loved her when they got to the stage where they were needing to chew on something. Plus she's cute as can be and gender neutral.
Baby Wipe Warmer
Most people say this is not necessary, but I disagree and used one for those first several months with all of my kids. I feel like it made for a more pleasant diaper change when I used one, like this warmer from Munchkin.
Swaddle Blankets
Swaddle blankets, like those from Aden + Anais, are an absolute must for helping your baby feel secure and sleep soundly. They’re breathable, versatile, and can be used for more than just swaddling—think burp cloths, nursing covers, or even as a light blanket. Another favorite is the stretchy swaddles from Copper Pearl!
One More Bonus Item- Snacks
Growing, birthing and caring for a baby is hard work and having healthy but yummy snacks on hand is essential, especially during those marathon nursing sessions. Grapes, Kind Nut Bars, string cheese, popcorn, pickles (it's a cliche for a reason after all) and turkey roll ups all make for easy and yummy snacks you can reach for. With baby #5, I even went as far as getting a tiny Cosmetic Fridge for my nursing station to keep cheese and cold grapes in for the middle of the night snack attacks.
As a seasoned mom, these items have truly been lifesavers for me, helping to ease the transition into life with a newborn. While every mom's experience is unique, I hope this list provides you with some helpful insights as you prepare for your own journey into motherhood. Remember, it's okay to lean on these essentials—they're here to make your life a little bit easier so you can focus on what really matters: loving on your new baby.
